The Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center (Prairielands) provides educational opportunities for persons interested in substance abuse treatment and counseling, including health professionals in primary prevention and treatment of substance abuse. Prairielands is housed at the University of Iowa College of Public Health. Services are offered on and off-campus, sometimes via the Iowa Communication Network and similar systems in each of the five states in its region. Prairielands also provides consultation, technical assistance, and continuing education seminars.

A Provider's Introduction to Substance Abuse Treatment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Individuals, First Edition, was published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), in 2001. Thereafter, a supplemental curriculum was developed to provide practitioners and administrators familiarity with the issues and barriers faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals in need of substance use services, Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center of New York City have joined together in curriculum development. The curriculum offers skill-building knowledge enhancing practical skills to offer sensitive, affirmative, culturally relevant, and effective treatment to LGBT individuals in substance use disorders treatment.
