PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: The PSATTC will hold the 2008-2009 Leadership Institute graduation on March 30, 2009 at the Hyatt Long Beach in Long Beach, CA. Mentors and protégés are also invited to attend the COD conference the following day at the Long Beach Convention Center. For more information, please contact Bethany Stern at bplain@ucla.edu.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: Arizona State University’s Center for Applied Behavioral Health Policy is now accepting presenter applications for the 10th Annual Summer Institute in Sedona, AZ. This year’s conference dates are July 21, 2009 through July 24, 2009. PRAIRIELANDS: Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center (PATTC) has completed its national workforce development survey of problem gambling treatment providers. The study was supported by The Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders, Cambridge Health Alliance. The implications of the results of this survey will be discussed by an expert panel consisting of ATTC directors and internationally recognized gambling researchers on April 1st, in Chicago, IL.

PRAIRIELANDS: Prairielands will have a NIATx Kick-Off meeting in South Dakota on March 23rd in Chamberlin, South Dakota. This is part of the NIATx pilot project in South Dakota. Janet Zwick is the coach and will co-facilitate the meeting with Anne Helene Skinstad.

CARIBBEAN BASIN: Buprenorphine and Office-Based Treatment of Opioid Dependence was conducted in San Juan, PR on March 14, 2009 by a group of physicians led by Angel Gonzalez, MD (Course Director, appointed by ASAM). The event was collaborative effort with ASAM and the Colegio de Médico Cirujanos to facilitate requirements for around 80 physicians to prescribe the medication. PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: On March 31 and April 1, 2009, the PSATTC in conjunction with PROTOTYPES Centers for Innovation in Health, Mental Health, and Social Services, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, Los Angeles County Alcohol and Drug Program Administration, the California Institute for Mental Health Women's Mental Health Policy Committee, DMH/CalWORKS/DPSS, US Department of Health and Human Services, SAMHSA, UCLA ISAP and the COD Staff Development Committee will host the 7th annual conference on Co-Occurring Disorders: Transforming Challenges into Opportunities at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, CA. The conference will provide an important opportunity for key stakeholders (policymakers, service providers, administrators and front-line staff of Community Based Organizations (CBOs), educators, researchers, consumers, families, etc.) to explore emerging best practices for co-occurring disorders (COD). The Conference Objectives are to identify challenges and solutions within existing systems for integration of services for COD care; to Increase collaboration between Alcohol and Drug Programs and the Department of Mental Health with the multiple systems of care serving COD clients at the state and local levels and to identify emerging best practices that address the complex needs of clients with COD. The day also includes presentations from local providers who are currently implementing recovery-based approaches such as street outreach, a family engagement team, women’s case management and a parent-child assistance program. Anticipated outcomes and next steps will be the creation of a formal structure to guide this effort, including a steering committee; workforce development, evaluation and community resource development work groups. The USA partners include Great Lakes and its key partners at Detroit’s Bureau of Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment and Recovery/DHWP. The goal of the project is to enhance the capacity of DSAPR to reduce HIV/AIDS prevalence by improving Substance Abuse prevention and rehabilitation (recovery support) services. Since there is no formal treatment offered in Zanzibar, the Great Lakes team is helping Zanzibar establish a peer-driven recovery organization including support groups. The first 7-day training includes knowledge dissemination regarding recovery based approaches; how to set up and run support groups (NA and the Millati Islami 12-step program); HIV/AIDS prevention; relapse prevention; cognitive restructuring and stages of change. The Detroit partners, under the leadership of Dr. Calvin Trent, have raised close to $12,000 that is being used for a facility and establishment of a web site. GREAT LAKES: Great Lakes is a participating ATTC in the CSAT-funded NIATx/ATTC Process Improvement Learning Collaborative Pilot. Our payer/co-sponsor in this effort is Detroit’s Bureau of Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment and Recovery/Department of Health and Wellness Promotion. The goal of the Great Lakes/Detroit pilot will be to implement a local process improvement learning collaborative for 6-8 providers including 2 recovery organizations. This provider network, which is part of an ongoing Recovery-oriented System of Care transformation, will focus its activities on improving access to recovery upon discharge from residential treatment. A ½ day supervisors’ only technical assistance session was included. The second session was held on January 5-7, 2009 in Cincinnati, Ohio and a third is being planned for April 2009. Supervisors from these sessions will apply for participation in the May 2009 MIA:STEP to be held at the SSA’s first training academy.For more information please contact Monica Velazquez, monivela@uic.edu.
