CARIBBEAN BASIN: The PFR/ATTC Leadership Institute is now entering its fifth group of protégés. The Institutes will be conducted at Hotel El Faro in Aguadilla PR from March 2-6, 2009. MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC held its first conference call with protégés for the 2009 Leadership Institute. Project Manager Deborah Rockford facilitated the call in which protégés received an orientation and introduction to taking the MBTI, TKI, and LEI assessments. read full discription

NORTHEAST: The Northeast ATTC held graduation for 16 Leadership Institute Protégées on February 26, 2009 in New York City. All sixteen graduates presented a ten minute overview of their individual leadership development projects. The topics of the projects ranged from developing a contingency management outcome training system to developing a training to de-stigmatize methadone maintenance.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: The PSATTC will hold the 2008-2009 Leadership Institute graduation on March 30, 2009 at the Hyatt Long Beach in Long Beach, CA. PRAIRIELANDS: PATTC is planning two national training-of-trainer (TOT) events; the first one will be based on A Provider’s Introduction to Treatment of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Persons with Substance Use Disorders, in Pasadena, CA, March 17th through 19th with master trainer Dr. Tom Freese. The second TOT, based on TAP21 and developed by PATTC and called Essential Skills: A guide for Substance Abuse Professionals, The TOT will be held in Orlando, Florida between May 5th and 8th.

MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC is providing leadership for the Arkansas Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP) strategic planning meeting on March 16-17, 2009 in Little Rock, Arkansas. The two-day staff retreat will include the Arkansas SSA Director and 24 personnel in the ADAP office. MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC continues to provide technical assistance to Committed Caring Faith Communities (CCFC), an organization of faith communities in Missouri which provide support ministries for persons in treatment and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Mid-America provides meeting space for CCFC’s regional meetings and workshops for faith organizations in the western part of Missouri. read full discription

NORTHEAST: The Northeast ATTC held a training for over 170 participants February 20, 2009 at Gateway Rehab in Pittsburgh, PA. The Northeast ATTC conducted a three hour overview of evidenced-based practices. A follow-up training will take place March 20, 2009 in which Prompting Awareness of Motivational Incentives (PAMI) will be presented as well as an overview of Motivational Interviewing and the Matrix Model.

NORTHEAST: The Northeast ATTC is currently accepting applications for 2009 Medical Student Advanced Assistantship. So far the Northeast has had 10 early admission applications for 14 slots. This three week intensive educational program for medical students offers both in class lecture and practical onsite experience for medical students to learn the best practices for addiction.

CARIBBEAN BASIN: Buprenorphine and Office-Based Treatment of Opioid Dependence will be conducted in San Juan, PR on March 14, by a group of physicians led by Angel Gonzalez, MD (Course Director, appointed by ASAM). The event is a collaborative effort with ASAM and the Colegio de Médico Cirujanos to facilitate requirements for around 80 physicians to prescribe the medication. new item PRAIRIELANDS: PATTC will host Motivational Interviewing Basic, Advanced and MIA:STEP trainings in North and South Dakota beginning in February. Prairielands ATTC is collaborating with the ND Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services to provide these trainings to approximately 40 supervisors and 210 clinicians across ND. Similarly, four two-day trainings in MI will be hosted in South Dakota, and participants will participate in the learning community by means of teleconference coaching sessions afterwards.

MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC held its first conference call with protégés for the 2009 Leadership Institute. Project Manager Deborah Rockford facilitated the call in which protégés received an orientation and introduction to taking the MBTI, TKI, and LEI assessments. Sharon Barcellos from the Grad School USDA spoke with the new protégés about the importance of completing these online assessments as part of the Leadership Institute process, and provided a PowerPoint which included snapshots of the various webpages involved and tips on how to successfully complete the three assessments. The conference will provide an important opportunity for key stakeholders (policymakers, service providers, administrators and front-line staff of Community Based Organizations (CBOs), educators, researchers, consumers, families, etc.) to explore emerging best practices for co-occurring disorders (COD). The Conference Objectives are to identify challenges and solutions within existing systems for integration of services for COD care; to Increase collaboration between Alcohol and Drug Programs and the Department of Mental Health with the multiple systems of care serving COD clients at the state and local levels and to identify emerging best practices that address the complex needs of clients with COD. PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: Arizona State University’s, Center for Applied Behavioral Health Policy (CABHP) is partnering with TERROS, Inc. to host, 5th Annual Cesar Chavez Behavioral Health Conference, on March 27, 2009 at Arizona State University, West campus. The theme is: Providing Best Practice Solutions for Addressing Behavioral Health and Health Disparities Among the Ethnic and Minority Communities of Arizona. This is a full day workshop, complete with plenary and breakout sessions. New to this conference is a youth track. Youth accepted at ASU in the a field related o behavioral health and youth from the Regional Behavioral Health Agency (RBHA) of Maricopa County, Magellan, are invited to attend. Sessions especially designed for this audience with be available for both the youth and participants. Registration opening shortly. This event is complimentary and will offer Continuing Education Hours/Units. MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC is collaborating with the Kansas SSA office to sponsor a meeting for department chairs of addiction studies programs in Kansas colleges and universities. The purpose of this meeting will be to design a peer review program with the goals of assessing, improving and standardizing addiction studies programs in higher education throughout the state. The all-day meeting is scheduled for February 27, 2009 in Topeka, KS. Mid-America ATTC is providing technical assistance for this effort in the form of travel stipends. The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitative Services Office of Addiction and Prevention Services, headed by the Kansas SSA, is providing the meeting room, meals and lodging for attending faculty members. MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC continues to provide technical assistance to the Missouri Department of Youth Services in conducting an annual training for new staff members on the curriculum, Foundations of Substance Use, Abuse and Dependence. The Department of Youth Services will hold this three-day training the first week in March. This curriculum was initially designed in 2002 through a partnership between Mid-America ATTC and the Missouri Department of Youth Services and contains a module on adolescents. This training focuses on participants’ life experience and how those experiences have shaped attitudes, beliefs and perceptions toward alcohol and other drugs. The training format includes short lectures, interactive activities, group discussion, videos and panel presentations. Mid-America ATTC provides materials for the workshop. MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC continues to provide technical assistance to Committed Caring Faith Communities (CCFC), an organization of faith communities in Missouri which provide support ministries for persons in treatment and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Mid-America provides meeting space for CCFC’s regional meetings and workshops for faith organizations in the western part of Missouri. CCFC has mini-grants available for faith-based organizations in Kansas City to implement the award-winning Girls Holla Back! HIV prevention program. This program, also sponsored by CCFC, has been very successful in St. Louis, Missouri. On March 31 CCFC will hold an informational meeting for African American churches in Kansas City to alert them to the availability of these mini-grants and how to apply. Girls Holla Back was developed by the Missouri Institute of Mental Health as a culturally and gender specific program designed to address the alarming rates of HIV among African American women.
