PRAIRIELANDS: Prairielands Addiction Technology Transfer Center (PATTC) has completed its national workforce development survey of problem gambling treatment providers. The study was supported by The Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders, Cambridge Health Alliance. The implications of the results of this survey will be discussed by an expert panel consisting of ATTC directors and internationally recognized gambling researchers in March, 2008, when planning for the development of an evidence-based curriculum for gambling treatment providers will start.
PATTC is planning two national training-of-trainer (TOT) events; the first one will be based on A Provider’s Introduction to Treatment of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Persons with Substance Use Disorders, in Pasadena, CA, March 17th through 19th with master trainer Dr. Tom Freese. The second TOT, based on TAP21 and developed by PATTC and called Essential Skills: A Guide for Substance Abuse Professionals. The TOT will be held in Orlando, Florida between May 5th and 8th.
Prairielands ATTC will host a Motivational Interviewing(MI) for Supervisors training series in South Dakota beginning in February. The three two-day trainings will be hosted in Vermillion, South Dakota, and participants will engage in a learning community by attending face-to-face and on-line coaching sessions. Motivational Interviewing for Helping Professionals will follow the MI supervisory series utilizing a format which includes two two-day sessions; MI Basic and Advanced. Prairielands ATTC is collaborating with the North Dakota Division of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services with similar planning which will provide MI Basic, Advanced and MIA:STEP training to approximately 40 supervisors and MI Basic and Advanced to approximately 210 clinicians throughout the state. PATTC is providing NIATx training and coaching in North Dakota, has started a NIATx pilot project in South Dakota and is involved in a NIATx project in Minnesota through the Action Campaign. In addition, Prairielands is continuing to expand its Native American Center for Excellence initiative and will start collecting data for the Native American MSM initiative in preparation for curriculum development on the same topic. We are also currently accepting nominations and planning for our 5th Annual Leadership Institute, to be held in Mystic Lake, MN, in April.

NORTHEAST: The Northeast ATTC conducted six training sessions for the University Of Pittsburgh School Of January 6 - 16, 2009 for over 120 Junior and Senior nursing students. The topic of the training was an Overview of Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT). Students were able to learn about SBIRT and practice a brief screen.

NORTHEAST: The Northeast ATTC is participating in the National Development and Research Institutes, Inc. (NDRI) and their Center for Excellence in Integrated Care (CEIC) to conduct technical assistance for the center and Dr. Flaherty will sit on the CEIC Implementation Steering Committee. Work started on this project November of 2008. A press conference was held January 9, 2009 announcing the Center.

Shafer, Director of the Center for Applied Behavioral Health Policy (CABHP) at Arizona State University’s College of Public Programs, presented a workshop at the American Probation and Parole Association Winter Training Institute in Myrtle Beach, SC, on February 9, 2009. CENTRAL EAST: In January, Project director Dr. Tom Durham began a second round of a Clinical Supervision Workshop/Clinics in New Jersey. In addition, Dr. Durham will begin an initial round for supervisors in Maryland starting in March. Each series lasts 10 months with one day-long meeting scheduled each month. This series will combine supervisory training with a clinic where participants are assigned to report on either current clinical case issues or implementation issues relevant to skills learned in the workshop.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: Arizona State University’s, Center for Applied Behavioral Health Policy (CABHP) is partnering with TERROS, Inc. to host, 5th Annual Cesar Chavez Behavioral Health Conference, on March 27, 2009 at Arizona State University, West campus. PRAIRIELANDS: Prairielands ATTC in collaboration with the Wisconsin Bureau of Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Services (BPTRS) is hosting a monthly Substance Abuse Teleconference Training held on the fourth Thursday of each month. Tele-training participants engage from various locations throughout Wisconsin and the training are hosted by the Wisconsin BPTRS in Madison, WI. Nationally prominent speakers for 2009 include: Dr. Peter Nathan, Dr. Ken Winters, Dr. Kate Speck, Dr. Sue Storti and Dr. Anne Helene Skinstad. MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC is providing support to the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska as they host a 3-day Red Road Approach Workshop at the Ponca Tribal Auditorium/ Dining Hall Building in Norfolk, Nebraska, April 8-10, 2009. Presenters for the three-day event are Janet Custer, Dana Kennebeck, and Gene D. Thin Elk. The Red Road Model interweaves traditional Native American healing practices, cultural views, and ceremonies with Westernized evidence-based treatment theories. Mid-America ATTC is offering a limited number of scholarship/travel stipends for Native American/American Indian partners living in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
