MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC has adapted a training curriculum originally designed in 2003 by the ATTC National Office and the Northwest Frontier ATTC. This curriculum, Best Practices in Addiction Treatment: A Workshop Facilitator’s Guide, initially designed to introduce evidence-based practices in a more general sense, has been adapted for use in delivering trainings on specific evidence-based practices. The original training was developed for three main purposes:
1) To help practitioners conceptualize how research-based methods can improve outcomes,
2) To identify a number of current evidence-based practices and
3) To examine some of the issues related to adopting innovative practices in community treatment settings.
The adaption used by Mid-America ATTC maintains the focus of the first section on illustrating how implementing evidence-based practices can improve outcomes, but instead of introducing the participants to several manualized evidence-based practices, it highlights only one and goes into depth on that singular practice. A section also has been added on the steps of implementation. The training continues the use of a case study of implementing change in a real treatment setting. Mid-America ATTC has conducted the training with these adaptations in two states: Best Practices in Adolescent Treatment in Omaha, Nebraska for 40 participants and Best Practices in Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment in Lawrence, Kansas for 40 participants. Melanie Adkins with the ATTC National Office assisted in changing all PowerPoint presentations designed for this curriculum into the new slide templates. Mid-America ATTC will gladly share these slides if other ATTCs are interested in replicating this training. For more information contact Pat Stilen at stilenp@umkc.edu or 816.482.1168.
