GREAT LAKES: Michigan’s Recovery Based Approaches Transformation: For the past year Great Lakes has served as Michigan’s consultant and technology transfer advisor on its efforts to transform its statewide behavioral health system. Under its county structure many of the counties are substance abuse and mental health boards. On September 7 Great Lakes Director, Lonnetta Albright joined Michigan’s SSA, CSAT and the Michigan Inter-Tribal Council (ATR Grantee) at a statewide forum for all County Board Directors to discuss federal and state future directions related to recovery-based system transformation. The first pilot is with the City of Detroit (Wayne County), which began over a year ago. Great Lakes and Detroit principals traveled to Philadelphia to observe and receive technical assistance followed by participation at the May 2008 Recovery Symposium led by Northeast ATTC. Detroit’s multi-system effort includes over 40 treatment providers, two recovery organizations, a drug court, the school system, jail system, HIV/AIDS clinicians, prevention and mental health. Several forums have been convened including, a cross-system “kick-off” (August 2008) and workshops (August 2008) provided for directors, clinicians, sponsors, mentors, primary health care, criminal justice and others who work with substance using individuals and families. Most recent workshops were: 1. Sponsor, Recovery Coach, Addiction Counselor: The Importance of Role Clarity and Role Integrity and 2. Recovery Planning: Principles and Application. The effort also intends to integrate evidence-based practices and will begin with the PAMI presentation. Plans are underway to train on Motivational Interviewing and the MIA:STEP blending product. For questions or additional information, pleast contact Lonnetta Albight at lalbrigh@uic.edu.
