SOUTHERN COAST: In Southern Coast ATTC's last Spotlight, the development of the SCATTC distance education website www.scattc.net was featured. This site is now live and has a variety of courses available in several formats: self-paced, and asynchronous and synchronous (live) instructions, with training materials available in many forms, such as: HTML, PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and interactive multimedia. Course content is delivered via streaming media easily accessed with less powerful computers working effectively on even a 56k connection. The following are courses that are currently available and coming soon:
Self-Paced
- Specialized Treatment for Women with Substance Use Disorders (4 modules, 8 hours)
- Methamphetamine 101 & 102 (3 hours each)
- Microsoft Office Suite 2003 (full tutorials with practice sessions for each softwareprogram, originally developed for those who are seeking Microsoft Office certification)

- Introduction to Adolescent Substance Abuse
- Applying Evidence-based Practices in Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment

NATIONAL OFFICE : The date has been set for the ATTC Network Orientation: August 26-27, 2008 in Kansas City, Missouri.

ONGOING NATIONAL OFFICE: Dates have been set for the ATTC Network & Directors Meetings! The Network Meeting will take place on December 2-3, 2008 (Tuesday - Wednesday). The Directors Meeting will immediatley follow on December 4-5, 2008 (Thursday - Friday). Both meetings will be held in Baltimore, MD at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel. Registation information will be available soon!

new item PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: The deadline for protégé applications has passed. The Pacific Southwest ATTC is now in the process if choosing protégés and confirming mentors for the September 15-19, 2008 LI Immersion Training.
 
Resources & Publications
  This section has been created to insure that the efforts of the Network are not duplicated, it will feature a listing of curricula and other products Regional Centers may be developing or completed so that the Network is aware of their plans. This way, Regional Centers can avoid the duplication of efforts and ideally promote collaboration on specific work.
new item NATIONAL OFFICE: The premiere issue of the ATTC National Office new e-journal, The Bridge: Linking Science and Service, was launched on Friday, July 25th, and distributed an initial subscriber list of over 675 individuals! ATTC Network staff should have received a copy in your inboxes on Friday, or you may view the issue online. new item NORTHEAST: The Northeast ATTC is hosting the Fifth Anniversary Recovery Sports-Link event an evening with the Pittsburgh Pirates, September 12, 2008. This event in its fifth year celebrates recovery and those who support recovery. The Northeast will host over 500 attendees at the baseball game as well as hold a VIP picnic for event sponsors.
new item NORTHEAST: The Northeast will be participating in the New York Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services recovery conference this September 14 and 15, 2008 to be held in Albany NY. Dr. Michael Flaherty will serve as a plenary speaker at the conference and the NeATTC will exhibit.
new item PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: On August 7, 2008 in Milwaukee, WI, Dr. Thomas Freese of the PSATTC will provide a Methamphetamine 101 training for attendees of the 2008 Access to Recovery Grantee Conference. For more information, please contact Dr. Thomas Freese at tefreese@ix.netcom.com

new item MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC sponsored a two-day training of trainers on the curriculum, Foundations of Substance Use, Abuse and Dependence, in Ashland, Nebraska, on July 16-17, 2008. read full discription
new item NORTHEAST: The Northeast ATTC’s New York Office will participate in the New York state Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) Recovery Month event the “Fifth Annual Recovery Fine Arts Festival". The festival showcases the achievement of artistic expression by persons in recovery and celebrates the benefit of recovery for individuals, families, and communities.
new item NORTHEAST: The Northeast ATTC completed the Fifteenth Annual Scaife Advanced Medical Student Fellowship in Alcohol and Other Drug Dependency program for 2008. Thirteen medical and psychology students participated in this year’s program. The program consists of lecture and experiential learning. The Northeast is currently developing plans to expand this program to New York State for 2010.
new item PRAIRIELANDS: Iowa Flood of 2008, a paper written by Anne Helene Skinstad, Ph.D. and Gene Lutz, Ph.D., highlights the challenges faced in Iowa Communities resulting from the 2008 flood and in addition lists methods for self care in the face of severe stress. new item PRAIRIELANDS: On July 25-26, 2008, Duane Mackey held an IC & RC Written Exam Review Training. This course assisted individuals in their review of information and will help them prepare to take the ICRC Written Certification Exam that is administered by South Dakota Chemical Dependency Certification Board. new item SOUTHEAST: Southeast ATTC will be attending the South Carolina Implementation Committee in Columbia on July 29, 2008. The Implementation Committee is very active in overseeing the "Breaking Barrier Building Dreams" (DAODAS) and the "OASIS" (Mental Health) grant's initiatives implemented in the demonstration sites, while moving towards statewide expansion.
new item SOUTHEAST: Southeast ATTC will evaluate a training on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered individuals and addictions on August 1, 2008, in South Carolina and how to best serve the population.

The completed Style Guide, as well as other brochure, stationery, and e-pub templates, will also be made available through this FTP site in the coming weeks. new item PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: On August 8, 2008 in Los Angeles, CA, the PSATTC, together with UCLA ISAP and Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches, will sponsor a training entitled, Professional Substance Abuse Assessment and Screening for Faith-Based Leaders. This 6 hour training is the third in a series of trainings for Faith-Based Leaders on Substance Abuse Screening, Assessment and Brief Intervention. new item PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: On August 13-15, 2008 in Los Angeles, CA the PSATTC will provide onsite support and continuing education for the 2008 UCLA Center for Advanced Longitudinal Drug Abuse Research (CALDAR) Summer Institute on Longitudinal Research. This three-day event will address current findings and future directions in longitudinal research on drug and alcohol abuse, HIV, mental health, and criminal justice. 07/14/2008 MID- AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC is co-sponsoring a two-day conference on returning veterans, Wellness Conference on Returning Veterans Issues in Omaha, Nebraska on August 16-17, 2008. Other sponsors of the event are the Adjutant General’s Office of the Nebraska National Guard, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Division of Behavioral Health, and the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System. Speakers are members of the Nebraska National Guard and counselors from the VA Health Care System. Participants will include returning veterans, veterans’ families, military and community health and mental health providers and substance abuse counselors. Topic areas to be addressed are: PTSD/Suicide Awareness, Substance Abuse/At Risk Behaviors, Sexual Boundaries, Primary Care Issues, Readjustment/Reintegration Issues, Benefits & Resources, and Vision for Unit Wellness Teams. new item MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC sponsored a two-day training of trainers on the curriculum, Foundations of Substance Use, Abuse and Dependence, in Ashland, Nebraska, on July 16-17, 2008. The 22 participants included professionals in substance abuse treatment, prevention, juvenile justice, public school education, and the faith community. This training focused on participants’ life experience and how those experiences have shaped attitudes, beliefs and perceptions toward alcohol and other drugs. The training format included short lectures, interactive activities, group discussion, videos and panel presentations. Because of the background of many of the participants optional sections on “Adolescent Resiliency” and “Spirituality” were also included. Jan Wrolstad, M.Div. and Richard Hayton, M.A., co-facilitated the training of trainers. For more information contact Jan Wrolstad at wrolstadj@umkc.edu or 816.482.1150.

NIDA Initiative Activities
new item NORTHEAST: The Northeast ATTC will host the following NIDA Blending Trainings on Buprenorphine, Treatment Planning MATRS and PAMI as well as, have an exhibit at the annual conferences of the Association of Addiction Professionals of NY being held October 13 – 15, 2008 in Saratoga NY. The Northeast ATTC will have a booth and provide PAMI Training at the Northern Tier Providers Conference being held in Lake Placid NY November 5-7, 2008. The Northeast ATTC has submitted proposals to provide seminars at the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers (ASAP) Conference in NYC in January 2009. Plans are also underway to convene the education and training providers of NYS in a Teachers and Trainers Summit to be held during the 2009 conference. A Northeast ATTC exhibit will also be set up throughout the week long ASAP conference.
