Our brightest idea and/or new project/program is...
new item SOUTHEAST: Southeast ATTC is developing a follow-up to our original monograph entitled, Alcohol and Other Drug Problems Among Addiction Professionals. http://www.attcnetwork.org/userfiles/file/Southeast/impaired_prof_ver3.pdf. The idea is to create a monograph that “branches out” to other health care disciplines, such as primary care doctors and nurses (who may be treating substance use disorder clients) who are themselves impaired by AOD abuse/dependence. Our next steps for the exciting product will be to research current literature on the topic, to contact key interest groups to partner on project, and to develop an outline of the monograph.
The Southeast ATTC is also proud to co-sponsor the upcoming Mini-Medical School to be held at Morehouse School of Medicine, July 21st, 2008, entitled, Understanding Drug Addiction: Focus on African Americans. This mini-school is being co-sponsored by NIDA, African-American Researchers and Scholars, and Community Voices. Featured keynote speakers include Dr. Carl Hart, Dr. Lawrence S. Brown, Jr., Dr. Westley Clark, Dr. Salaam Semaan, and Dr. Jean Bonhomme.
In addition to the mini-medical school event, the Southeast ATTC is currently working with the Georgia SSA office on the upcoming 2nd Annual GA State School of Addiction Studies, The Pillars of Prevention, Treatment and Recovery to be held in Augusta, GA, on August 18-22, 2008. The School is co-sponsored by a number of organizations including the Department of Human Resources (Division of MHDDAD Office of Addictive Diseases and Division of Public Health Office of Prevention Services and Programs), the Department of Juvenile Justice, and the Department of Corrections.

new item MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC continues to co-sponsor with Committed Caring Faith Communities regional meetings for faith organizations in the western part of Missouri. Committed Caring Faith Communities is an organization of faith communities in Missouri which provide support ministries for persons in treatment and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. These regional quarterly meetings are an opportunity for these faith communities and others who are interested in this work to network with other faith-based organizations, hear information on the latest developments in the field of substance abuse and related issues, introduce other organizations or projects that might be of assistance to the faith community, identify the training needs of faith organizations, and hear about the programs of each of the groups. These meetings are open to any faith organization in Missouri interested in substance abuse prevention, treatment, or recovery support services. Many of the faith community groups which belong to this organization are also part of the Missouri Access to Recovery project. The next quarterly meeting is scheduled for July 30, 2008 in one of Mid-America ATTC’s training rooms. For more information contact Jan Wrolstad at wrolstadj@umkc.edu or 816.482.1150.
new item MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC is providing technical assistance to the state of Arkansas on a recently awarded Robert Wood Johnson Grant for Advancing Recovery: State and Provider Partnerships for Quality Addiction Care. Over a two-year period, four treatment providers in Arkansas will implement the evidence-based practices of continuing care and case management services. Currently, Mid-America Director Pat Stilen and Senior Project Manager of Evaluation Heather Gotham are providing support to the Arkansas SSA office on implementation, data management, and trainings on the telephone continuing care curriculum designed by James McKay, Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania. Clients who have completed residential or intensive outpatient treatment can participate in telephone calls with their counselor for up to 18 months. Each call monitors symptoms and progress, and the call schedule is adapted to client needs over time. Stilen and Gotham worked with McKay to reformat the curriculum to meet the needs of Arkansas providers. For more information contact Pat Stilen at stilenp@umkc.edu or 816.481.1168.
new item NORTHEAST: The New York office of the Northeast ATTC has been participating in the Tobacco Recovery Coalition of Capital District . This coalition is located in Albany, New York and will be meeting for the final time on July 17, 2008. This coalition came together as a group of service providers interested in providing tobacco free services in April 2004. Collaboration as a coalition has led to 16 OASAS certified treatment providers becoming “tobacco-free” facilities by February 2007. This coalition sponsored in collaboration with the Seton Health Smoking Cessation Center in Upstate New York, three conferences over the past few years that have trained almost 300 clinicians! Now that the new OASAS (New York State) Tobacco-free regulations are becoming effective on July 24, 2008 and there are numerous resources available to providers to help them maintain and develop their tobacco-free services this coalition feels confident that the gains will be supported and sustained. This coalition has been a very inspirational as it represented a multi-disciplinary effort of professionals from health care, addictions treatment, county and state government all working together on behalf of saving lives. It was pioneering and frequently challenging but it appears that it is incredibly rewarding nonetheless. NeATTC staff took active part in this coalition.

The goal of this coalition is to identify and build a coordinated system of care in Pennsylvania capable of addressing in a collaborative manner the needs and priorities of Pennsylvanians for coordinated healthcare in the prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery of substance use and co-occurring disorders. During these meeting the coalition reviewed evidenced based –practices and in particular discussed the NIDA Blending products.
