Reminders, projects, activities & minutes!
  NATIONAL OFFICE: Dates have been set for the ATTC Network & Directors Meetings! The Network Meeting will take place on December 2-3, 2008 (Tuesday - Wednesday). The Directors Meeting will immediatley follow on December 4-5, 2008 (Thursday - Friday). Both meetings will be held in Baltimore, MD at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel. Registation information will be available soon!

new item MID-AMERICA: Mid-America ATTC provided a two-hour workshop, Sentimientos y Emociones que Ocurren Durante el Divorcio/The Emotional Response to Divorce, at El Centro Inc. in Kansas City, Kansas on May 21, 2008. The primary purpose of this workshop was to create awareness of the emotional processes that accompany divorce and how this emotional rollercoaster could increase the risk for developing substance abuse problems, plus exploring some healthy ways for adults to cope with this situation while reducing the divorce’s emotional impact on their children. Mid-America ATTC Project Manager of Evaluation, Alex Barajas-Muñoz M.S., presented this workshop in Spanish. Twenty persons who are separated or in the process of divorce attended the event. new item NORTHEAST: On May 20-22, Dr. Michael Flaherty attended a meeting of the Brandeis/Harvard external advisory board for the NIDA-funded Center on Managed Care and Drug Abuse Treatment. The objective of the Center is to investigate how organizational management, financing and payment within managed care can be improved to benefit substance abusers seeking treatment. Dr. Flaherty gave presentations to the assembled members on The Emerging Recovery Movement and a ROSC Model and Payment Methodologies Today and in a ROSC Model.
new item PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: On May 22, 2008 in Phoenix, Arizona, Michael Walker of the PSATTC delivered a seven-hour training seminar on the role of Child Protective Services (CPS) in working with methamphetamine-impacted families. Twenty-five CPS professionals attended the training. Topics addressed included the neuroscience of methamphetamine, collaboration between substance abuse treatment providers and CPS, and stages of change. new item PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: On May 28-30, 2008 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Thomas Freese, Ph.D. represented the PSATTC at the 4th Biennial 4TC Collaboration Meeting (which includes the Regional Training Centers (RTCs), AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETCs), STD/HIV Prevention Training Centers (PTCs), and ATTCs. In addition, Dr. Freese presented Substance Use, Decision Making, and the Testing Guidelines: The Picture Gets More Complicated. new item PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: On June 6-7, 2008 in San Ysidro, the PSATTC, together with the Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center, Francis J. This annual event will feature information on the latest trends and treatments for TB, STDs, HIV, Hepatitis C, and substance abuse; the relationship, impact, and needs of these epidemics locally; clinical interviewing skills to better assess, refer, and treat clients with multiple diagnoses; evidence-based prevention strategies to address STD and HIV transmission; and the importance of including a risk assessment in patient care. Thomas Freese, Ph.D. is one of the featured speakers, and will speaking about the latest information available for drug addiction prevention and treatment. This year’s event continues a tradition of excellence as the PSATTC hosts an array of presenters representing the top leaders and innovators in the behavioral health field. 05/19/2008 PACIFIC SOUTHWEST: On July 14-18, 2008 in Sedona, AZ, the PSATTC will present a Motivational Interviewing Academy in conjunction with its 9th Annual Summer Institute. The week-long training will focus on applying knowledge as participants follow up a daylong immersion with breakout sessions throughout the week, as students work directly with Robert Rhode, Ph.D., a leading Arizona instructor who trained at the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers.
