PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  The kickoff workshop for the Los Angeles County Process Improvement pilot project will be held on January 27, 2006 in Universal City, CA.  The workshop is co-sponsored by Pacific Southwest and the Los Angeles County Alchohol and Drug Programs Administration and will be facilitated by Dr. Steve Gallon of Northwest Frontier, and Todd Molfenter from the NIATx national program office at the University of Wisconsin.  For more information, please contact Beth Rutkowski.

PRAIRIELANDS:  Will conduct the Toolbox Training Session, "Group Counseling."  The Toolbox Training is a curriculum based on the SAMHSA TAP #21 as well as the NIDA Principles of Effective Drug Treatment.  read full description.

PRAIRIELANDS:  Will begin the Toolbox Training Series in North Dakota on Monday, January 30, 2006.  The two sessions being offered are, "The Biology of Addiction" and "Professional and Ethical Responsibilities."  More information available at the Prairielands Web site.

PRAIRIELANDS:  In collaboration with the University of South Dakota will provide the "Written Prep Exam" training on February 2-3, 2006.  This training is intended for counselor trainees, especially Native American counselor trainees to pass the IC&RC Written Exam.  More information can be found on the Prairielands Web site.

CENTRAL EAST:  Will be presenting "Criminal Justice - Substance Abuse Cross Training" Working Together for Change (Adapted for the SVORI - 2005) on January 24-25, 2006 in Memphis, TN.  read full description.

CENTRAL EAST:  Karen Ingersoll will be providing a training for DC APRA on Cognitive Behavior Therapy.  The training will be held in Washington, DC on February 13, 2006.

CENTRAL EAST:  Suzan Swanton will be providing a training "Engaging Substance Abuse Patients in Treatment," for Johns Hopkins.  The training will be held in Glen Burnie, MD on January 31, 2006.

NATIONAL OFFICE:  Co-sponsoring along with SAMHSA CSAT, NIDA, NIAAA, and the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, the 2006 Joint Meeting on Adolescents Treatment Effectiveness, March 27-29, 2006 in Baltimore, MD.  The ATTC Network is invited to attend, registration is free.

GREAT LAKES:  In partnership with the Illinois SSA and its ATR project Great Lakes is planning and implementing a one-day workshop on February 10 and 17, 2006 for Faith-Based organizations and Recovery Support Service (RSS) providers regarding referral processes and clinical considerations after clients have entered RSS services.  read full description.

GREAT LAKES:  In collaboration with Michigan's SSA and its Training Project, Great Lakes is enhancing its 2-day Clinical Supervision Training and expanding the program to include on-going follow-up activities (teleconferences, observation, reading and consultation) to ensure supervisors are effectively implementing lessons learned and are able to document improvement.  read full description.

SOUTHERN COAST:  Is in the countdown to their third Leadership Institute.  The Immersion Training will take place in Destin, FL on January 23-27, 2006.  The Institute had a change of dates and location due to the very active hurricane season the Gulf Coast experienced this year.
01/09/06 SOUTHERN COAST:  Will sponsored the "Gaining Awareness:  Adult Co-Occurring Disorders Training" at Mt Vernon, AL on February 2 and 3, 2006.  This basic "peer-based awareness training" is for counselors, social workers, case-managers, nurses, doctors, clinicians, mental health and substance abuse professionals.

SOUTHERN COAST:  Will present "Clinical Supervision: A Key to Treatment Success" in Key West, FL on January 9-11, 2006.  This training is provided to fulfill a technical assistance request from WestCare Florida (a company with substance abuse treatment facilities in 6 states).  Jim Knorp and Karen Garrett will provide the Northwest Frontier's curriculum to a select group of 12 clinicians from California, Florida and Canada.  For further information, contact Jim Knorp.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  Beth Rutkowski attended and presented at the semi-annual Community Epidemiological Workgroup (CEWG) meeting in Phoenix, AZ on January 18-20, 2006.  Beth presented the latest information on Los Angeles County Drug Trends:  A Semi-Annual Update.  For more information, contact Beth Rutkowski.
01/09/06 SOUTHERN COAST:  Has added the NIDA/SAMHSA-ATTC Blending Initiative Product brochures, the Evidence-based Practice section to their Web site to increase dissemination of the information.
01/09/06 SOUTHERN COAST:  Conducted the "Buprenorphine Treatment:  A Training for Multidisciplinary Addiction Professionals"  in Tampa, FL, on November 30, 2005.  Two more trainings are scheduled to be conducted February 3, 2006 in St. Augustine, FL and March 10, 2006 in Miami, FL.  The presenters for this training are Deborah Orr, PhD, and Judy Micale, MS, CAPP.  For further information about these trainings please contact Judy Micale.

01/09/06 DASIS REPORT:  "Adolescents with Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders: 2003".  Study found that adolescent admissions with co-occurring disorders were more likely to be female (38%) than other adolescent admissions (28%).  Read full report.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  On January 10, 2006, Pacific Southwest will be providing a fill Good Research Practice (GRP) training for the Pacific Node of the Clinical Trials Network and other researchers at the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs in Los Angeles, CA.  There will also be a short, condensed version of this training given the next day, January 11, 2006 also in Los Angeles, CA.  For more information contact Thomas Freese.
PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  Provided a three-day training on the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID), January 18-20, 2006 in Los Angeles, CA.  This training will teach participants the proper protocol for administering the SCID instrument.  Both days must be completed to receive a certificate of completion.  For more information contact Bethany Plain.
PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  Provided a two-day training on the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) on January 5-6, 2006.  This training taught participants the correct procedure for administering the ASI instrument.  For more information contact Beth Rutkowski.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  Dr. Michael Shafer (Pacific Southwest Co-Director) and Dr. William Miller (PI of the CTN Southwest Node) have been collaborating on the planning of a two-day conference, tentatively scheduled for April 11-12, 2006 in Albuquerque, NM entitled, "Promoting the Adoption of Evidence Based Practices in Substance Abuse Treatment."  read full description.
CENTRAL EAST:  Co-sponsored with ASAM a training, "Pharmacological and Nonpharmacological Treatment of Alcohol Dependence."  The speakers, Eric Strain, MD and Davane Ghandi, MD presented on January 14, 2006 in Columbia, MD.
MID-AMERICA:  Providing RA to the Oklahoma SSA office to establish a state-wide addiction treatment training calendar.  In December Mid-America Director Pat Stilen, and several staff members met with OK SSA Director Ben Brown, and other state personnel to begin the process.  For more information contact Pat Stilen, 816-482-1168.

SOUTHEAST:  Hosted a SVORI (Serious Violent Offender Re-Entry Initiative) Cross Discipline Training on January 17-18, 2006 in Columbus, SC.  Southeast is partnering with the South Caroline Department of Corrections (SCDC) to provide SVORI training to community teams from six South Carolina areas selected by the department.  read full description.

01/09/06 NORTHEAST:  On January 5, 2006, Northeast conducted a 2-hour video presentation of "Offering Positive Incentives to Change Behavior" for the Western Psychiatric Institute and State Hospital Conference in Pennsylvania.  The presentation highlighted the principles of Motivational Incentives and the MIEDAR CTN protocol and products being designed to promote awareness of Motivational Incentives.
01/09/06 PRAIRIELANDS:  Anne Helene Skinstad, PhD, made a one-hour presentation at the National Center for Responsible Gaming Annual Conference on Gaming and Addiction held in Las Vegas on December 7 and 8, 2005.  The title of her presentation was "Connecting Science and Practice:  The Impact of Gambling Research on Clinicians."
01/09/06 PRAIRIELANDS:  Displayed two posters at the American Public Health Association's 133rd Annual Meeting and Exposition held in Philadelphia, PA on December 11-14, 2005.  The two posters were:  1) "Understanding How Evidence-Based Approaches are Implemented in a Rural Population:  Does the Evidence Stand Up?"; and 2) "Transferring Substance Use Treatment Research to Practice."  Posters were presented by Maurine Orwa, Graduate Research and Evaluation Assistant.
01/09/06 SOUTHERN COAST:  Is updating their state-specific strategic plans for delivery of ATTC services.  One Strategic Planning meeting was conducted for Florida on December 1, 2005 and another is scheduled for January 11, 2006.

01/09/06 SOUTHERN COAST:  Is now negotiating to contract with the Florida Office of Drug Control to provide services for the Adolescent Treatment Coordination State Incentive Grant that was awarded in August to Florida.  This contract will provide an Adolescent Specialist position for Southern Coast as well as funding for training, technical assistance and product development activities for the grant.

PRAIRIELANDS:  Will conduct the Toolbox Training Session, "Group Counseling."  The Toolbox Training is a curriculum based on the SAMHSA TAP #21 as well as the NIDA Principles of Effective Drug Treatment.  The 12 module series is designed to prepare entry level substance abuse counselors for the certification exam. The Group Counseling module will be conducted on Friday, January 27, over the Iowa Communications Network.  More information can be found on Prairielands Web site.

CENTRAL EAST:  Will be presenting "Criminal Justice - Substance Abuse Cross Training" Working Together for Change (Adapted for the SVORI - 2005) on January 24-25th, in Memphis, TN.  This training is limited to the local persons involved with offender reentry.  The Opening Speaker is Commissioner George M. Little from the Tennessee Department of Correction.  The two trainers will be Jonathan Head from Trinity Counseling Services, Inc. and Cynthia Moreno Tuohy representing Central East (both SVORI trained trainers).

01/09/06 SOUTHERN COAST:  "Compendium of Evidence-Based Practices."  This compendium of evidence-based substance abuse treatment practices was created in November 2005 and organizes the most up-to-date information on particular practices.  The information is organized using the Texas Christian University's (TCU) Treatment Process Model developed by Dr. Dwayne Simpson (2002).  This model is a systematic framework for representing how treatment works.  This Compendium will be updated periodically as new information become available to the field.  Compendium of Evidence-Based Practices.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  Planning is well underway for a joint Pacific Southwest/Southwest Node CTN conference for April 10 and 11, 2006 in Albuquergue, NM.  The partnership between the University of Arizona and the University of New Mexico surrounding this event will bring together researchers from both the Southwest Node and Pacific Southwest Node CTN, along with trainers from Pacific Southwest to highlight the CTN blending products for community based programs in the state of New Mexico.  The state behavioral health agency has committed sponsorship funds for this event, along with the single state payor, Value Options.  A hotel location has been secured and the Governor of New Mexico has agreed to address the audience.  Registration material is scheduled for distribution February 1, 2006.
PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  Dr. Michael Shafer (Pacific Southwest Co-Director) and Dr. William Miller (PI of the CTN Southwest Node) have been collaborating on the planning of a two-day conference, tentatively scheduled for April 11-12, 2006 in Albuquerque, NM entitled, "Promoting the Adoption of Evidence Based Practices in Substance Abuse Treatment."  This conference will highlight all of the blending protocols, provide an overview to the CTN and ATTC Networks, and afford presentations on a variety of topics.  A planning committee, formed of state agency and local treatment providers, has been established.

GREAT LAKES:  In collaboration with the American Society of Addiction Medicine, Great Lakes co-sponsored a four-hour course, "Pharmacotherapy and Non-Pharmacotherapy Treatment for Alcohol Dependence" January 14, 2006.  Great Lakes marketed event to non-physician professionals; exhibited; is applying for continuing education for non-physicians attending the workshop; and collected GPRA.  CMEs and CEUs will be awarded.  This is the second ASAM collaboration.  A third workshop is planned for January 28, 2006 in Green Bay, WI.  Contact Tiffany Kilpatrick or visit Great Lake's Web site for more information.
GREAT LAKES:  Great Lakes Director met with ITC leaders and their behavioral healthcare communication committee to establish a formal collaboration.  Planned activities include:  Needs Assessment of organizational readiness; Clinical Supervision workshops in collaboration with Michigan's Training Project; Motivational Interviewing workshops and techinical assistance; coordinating meeting with William White re: Recovery Management within the Native American Community; literature reviews and identifying requested resources and potential evidence-based models for Native American populations and participating in the upcoming Regional Leadership Institute to be held in Michigan (August 2006).  Contact Lonnetta Albright for more information.
GREAT LAKES:  Great Lakes Director Lonnetta Albright was invited for 2nd year to present the keynote at the Minority Counselors Training Institute's certified counselors graduation ceremony on December 17, 2005 in Madison, WI.  New counselors involved in WAAODA's 2-year program celebrated their accomplishment with a graduation ceremony and dinner.  Presentation focused on strength-based approaches including suggested tools and approaches for working with clients.  ATTC and other national products were disseminated.  Contact Lonnetta Albright for more information.

SOUTHEAST:  Hosted a SVORI (Serious Violent Offender Re-Entry Initiative) Cross Discipline Training on January 17-18, 2006 in Columbus, SC.  Southeast is partnering with the South Caroline Department of Corrections (SCDC) to provide SVORI training to community teams from six South Carolina areas selected by the department.  The SVORI Training Team for the State of South Carolina will provide reentry training for a community team comprised of thirty-five (35) substance abuse and criminal justice professionals, as well as other stakeholders who contribute to the employment, housing and health care needs of ex-offenders reentering the mainstream of society.  The content of the course will familiarize criminal justice professionals with basic substance use disorder treatment terminology, philosophy and approaches; and substance use disorder treatment professionals with basic criminal justice terminology, philosophy and approaches.  The four-day training of trainers will familiarize the trainers with the curriculum and allow them ample opportunity to practice delivery of new material and share techniques with other experienced trainers on the more subtle and difficult aspects of the training.
SOUTHEAST:  Will be participating in the planning and attending the J.B. Fuqua Mental Health Forum at Morehouse School of Medicine on January 27, 2006 in Atlanta, GA.  The lecture series is designed to provide evidence-based solutions for communities, health care providers, and policymakers committed to addressing the mental health system.  The first four lectures will examine the flaws in the current interface between the criminal justice and mental health systems.  The first series moderator will be 16th Surgeon General of the United States Dr. David Satcher and will feature speakers Judge Greg Mathis, Eric H. Holder, Jr., Dr. Michelle Staples-Home, and Rocio Del Milagro Woody.
01/09/06 SOUTHERN COAST:  Is conducting a forum with several key Florida stakeholders including the SSA's Office, several academic institutions, and CEOs from several agencies throughout the state.  The forum will be held at the University of South Florida Mental Health Institute in Tampa, FL on February 10, 2006.  The forum will begin to discuss how best to set an action plan for conducting pilot and large scale roll-outs of specific evidence-based practices in the state.  This was one of the points of discussion at the strategic planning meeting.
