NORTHWEST FRONTIER:  Conducting a 15-hour workshop on Group Counseling Skills at the Annual Idaho Conference on Alcohol and Drug Dependency, May 16-19.
NORTHWEST FRONTIER:  Chairing a panel presentation titled "Challenges of Clinical Supervision for Empirically Supported Treatments" at the NIDA Blending Clinical Practice and Research Conference, June 6-7.
NORTHWEST FRONTIER:  Conducting 3 workshops related to the adoption of evidence-based practices at the annual Washington Institute on Addictions Treatment, June 23-24.
PRAIRIELANDS:  Will conduct the Clinical Evaluation:  Screening module of the Toolbox Training Program over the ICN in Iowa and IVN in North Dakota on May 27, 2005.  Candace Peters, MA, CADC, will be the presenter for the 4 1/2 hour session.

CENTRAL EAST:  The next meeting of the DC Addictive Disorder Service Provider Consortium (ADSPC) will be facilitated by Cynthia Moreno Tuohy on May 9 from 3-5pm.  Cynthia offered TA to the creation, formation and development of this new providers group serving prevention, intervention, treatment and community support providers in the Washington, DC area, as the ADSPC readied for hearings to address gaps in the provider system to the DC government.

PRAIRIELANDS:  In collaboration with ASAM will be sponsoring the Opioid Awareness: A Collaborative Treatment Approach workshop on June 3, 2005 and the Buprenorphine and Office-Based Treatment of Opioid Dependence on June 4, 2005.  Both workshops will be held at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center in Minneapolis.
MID-AMERICA:  Held the second Buprenorphine Awareness workshop in its region Thursday, May 12, 2005, in Wichita, KS.  40 persons attended.  read full description.
NORTHEAST:  Will offer "Buprenorphine for Non-Medical Personnel" training at the Regional Training Institute in Erie, PA, June 22-24.  Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs, Kenneth Dickenson will lead the program for SUD treatment professionals.

Facts/statistics impacting the field!
ATTC IMPACT SURVEY:  With 11 newsletters published nationwide, over 145,000 newsletters, including 10,000 in Spanish, were disseminated by the Network to approximately 35,000 people in 2004. Information from the ATTC Impact Survey.
 
Resources & Publications
This section has been created to insure that the efforts of the Network are not duplicated, it will feature a listing of curricula and other products Regional Centers may be developing or completed so that the Network is aware of their plans. This way, Regional Centers can avoid the duplication of efforts and ideally promote collaboration on specific work.
MID-AMERICA:  Published the final reports on the Workforce Needs Assessment Surveys conducted in 2004 in three states in the region: Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.  read full description.

NORTHEAST:  Will publish a new Resource Links newsletter titled, "Preventing Underage Drinking and Other Drug Use: What Schools and Colleges Can Do."  This guide is designed to raise awareness of evidence-based practices and existing resources.  It will be distributed to nearly 10,000 high school and college educators in NJ, NY and PA and will be available to the Network via the Northeast Web site (under "Products") for download and printing the week of May 23.

NORTHEAST:  In conjunction with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS) and the Mental Illness Education Project, are please to announce the addition of free online access to the popular co-occurring video: "An Integrated Model for the Treatment of People with Co-Occurring Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Disorders," by Dr. Ken Minkoff to the PA-Co-Occurring.Org Web site.  Continuing education credits are offered for viewing the video and completing a post test.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  Presented with the Applied Behavioral Health Policy at the University of Arizona and introduction to motivational interviewing at the Yavapai Corrections meeting in Cottonwood, AZ, on Friday, May 13.
NORTHWEST FRONTIER: Chaired the program committee for the Northwest Institute of Addiction Studies, scheduled for July 28-20, 2005, in Portland, OR.  Featured speakers include Tom McLellan, several NIDA CTN researchers, RWJ Fellows and others sharing evidence-based practices.  The program and registration information is available at www.nwias.org.
NORTHWEST FRONTIER:  Regional workgroup convenes May 20 to complete first draft of a thorough revision of the Performance Assessment Rubrics for the Addiction Counseling Competencies.
NORTHWEST FRONTIER:  SVORI training of trainers for the Northwest Region took place on May 10-13 in Portland, OR.  Participants include SVORI grantees and drug court representatives.
NORTHWEST FRONTIER:  Continuing a state wide pilot project on treatment system improvement.  Conducted the 5th and 6th learning session for all participating agencies and technical assistance coaches on May 12.

Participating will be 15 protégés and 15 mentors representing public and private sectors related to the addiction and mental health fields, including community and faith-based organizations, government agencies, and private practice clinicians, among others. Ellen Brinkley will be attending from Southeast, who will be functioning as a mentor and has been lending a hand in the training logistics. A Booster Session will be in August 2005 and Project presentation and Graduation will be in November 2005. PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  Richard Poppy, M.A., LISAC, and Glen Matchett-Morris, Ph.D., LPC, are presenting "Clinical Supervision:  Building Chemical Dependency Counselor Skills" on May 11-12, 2005, in Flagstaff, AZ, and June 9-10, 2005, in Las Cruces, NM.  This is a workshop that focuses on the teaching and mentoring aspects of clinical supervision in addiction treatment settings.  We have found this training to be beneficial to clinical supervisors in related disciplines.  The goal of the training is to provide participants an opportunity to increase their understanding and skill in assessing the clinical skills of counselors and develop learning plans that will assist in their continued professional development.  More information is available:  Click here for more information on the Flagstaff event.  Click here for more information on the Las Cruces event.

PACIFIC SOUTHWEST:  Robert Rhode, Ph.D., is presenting "Motivating Incentives" May 12, 2005, in Phoenix, AZ, and June 10, 2005, in Albuquerque, NM.  This workshop describes how clients have reliably used contingency management to modify their substance use in favor of less use by making abstaining or attending treatment more attractive immediately.  This session will describe how to identify a client behavior for reinforcement, how to select rewards, and how to start using those rewards to help the client make progress toward treatment goals.  More information is available at the following Web site:  Click here for more information on the Phoenix event; Click here for more information on the Albuquerque event.

ASI BLENDING TEAM:  Mid-America is collaborating with a Kansas City, MO, Methadone Treatment program to pilot a Mentoring Model as a supplement to the ASI-Based Treatment Planning Curriculum classroom version.  With the support and "buy in" from clinical and administrative leadership, 8 counselors have participated in the 6-hour classroom training and will next be receiving one-to-one mentoring to enhance their treatment planning skills.  Products developed from this pilot study include a Counselor Treatment Plan that encourages counselors to develop problem statements, goals, objectives, and interventions for the purpose of evaluating and improving their own treatment planning skills; and Self-Evaluation Checklists for both treatment planning and clinical documentation activities.  The Mentoring Model will be refined based on feedback from counselors and their leadership and next incorporated with MO COSIG participating treatment agencies.

ASI BLENDING TEAM:  Mid-America with Mountain West supported a one-day pilot workshop on the NIDA ASI Treatment Planning curriculum package on March 24, 2005.  The training took place in Las Vegas, NV.  Mid-America sent David McWilliams, National Certified Psychologist with the Missouri Department of Mental Health Division of Alcohol and Drug Abuse as a participant.  Deni Carise and Megan Love from Treatment Research Institute (TRI) and Pat Stilen with Mid-America, have begun the next phase of ASI Treatment Planning curriculum development.  The subsequent product will blend the 6-hour ASI Treatment Planning classroom training with the ASI Treatment Planning Software manual materials.

ASI BLENDING TEAM: Products for this Blending initiative have been redefined to delete the previous emphasis on a specific software module. The primary focus will remain on a training package for integration of clinical assessments with treatment planning, using the ASI as the primary example for the clinical assessment. Redefined products in development: (1) Curriculum package to include handouts, resources related to assessment, treatment planning, and documentation guidelines. ASI-based examples will be utilized throughout (Mid-America ATTC), (2) On-line Course (Mountain West ATTC), (3) Briefing Package. An overview presentation of the blending initiative, its rationale, design, and products (Gulf Coast ATTC) and (4) Resource Kit in electronic media including presentations, handouts, bibliographies, sample forms/reports, and other resource listings.

BUPRENORPHINE AWARENESS BLENDING TEAM: Sent package to each Regional Center. Materials on three of the package's CDs including the trainers manual, PowerPoint slides, the bibliography, and the Bup brochure are on the iNSiDER. The package includes: a paper copy of the manual, a DVD of the "Put Your Smack Down," a CD of the Central East on-line course, and 3 CD's containing the training, the PowerPoint slides, and the Bibliography. It is the responsibility of the Regional Center to make any copies needed in their region of this material. All materials are designed so that Regional Centers can customize the information to meet the needs in their areas--and add their name, etc. to the training.

BUPRENORPHINE AWARENESS BLENDING TEAM:  ATTC National Office will host awareness training and the training for trainers on the Buprenorphine Awareness package developed by the Blending Team, January 25-27, 2005, Kansas City, MO.   Tom Freese will facilitate the three-day training. Day 1 of the training will focus on the package content and be open to approximately 20 providers in the Kansas City area and trainers and/or representatives from the ATTC Regional Centers.  Day 2 and 3 will be the actual Training of Trainers and is intended for Regional Center trainers and/or representatives.

BUPRENORPHINE AWARENESS BLENDING TEAM:  Completed the first Blending Initiative package entitles “Buprenorphine Treatment: A Training for Multidisciplinary Addiction Professionals.” The package includes the following materials: (1)Printed copies of: The Training Guide for the 6-hour training and a draft informational brochure about the product. This draft can be customized by individual centers to meet local needs. (2) Two CD Cases each with 2 CD-ROM disks. (a) The clear case contains: the Power Point presentation for the training and the video, “Put Your Smack Down! A Video about Buprenorphine” This video is used during Module VI of the training. (b) The blue case contains: supporting material for the training, a training Guide and a informational brochure and an Annotated Bibliography (Draft) and “Buprenorphine Treatment of Opioid Addiction: A Guide for Counselors,” an online course develop by the CEATTC.  These materials have been submitted to Dr. Suman Rao from NIDA and Dr. Karl White from SAMHSA for review and will be sent to Regional Centers and CTN Nodes as soon as final approval is given.

MOTIVATIONAL INCENTIVES BLENDING TEAM: Great Lakes held a Blending Team Meeting March 15-16, 2005, in Chicago, IL, to develop a dissemination packet of products/activities as a Motivational Incentives Awareness Campaign that incorporates examples from the MIEDAR (CTN protocol) such as the Fishbowl technology.  Products and activities are designed to educate, inform and generate interest in adoption of Motivational Incentives as a science-based approach with proven efficacy for behavioral change.  Product - Tentative concepts: 1) Motivational Incentives Awareness Powerpoint Presentation that includes Flash Media technology - audience includes NASADAD, CTN, Policy Makers; 2) Motivational Incentives Brochure; 3) Newsletters; 4) Motivational Incentives Video and "How to Use" the video as a workshop or in-service; 5) Compact Disc and 6) Testimonials from clinicians and/or clients who were part of the CTN study.  Testimonials will be used as part of Powerpoint presentations, brochures, videos, etc. Present were ATTC Members Lonnetta Albright (chair) and Joseph D. Rosenfeld (Great Lakes), Anne Helene Skinstad (Prairielands), and Amy Shanahan (Northeast).  Also present were Tim Condon and Denise Pintello from NIDA, Roxanne Kibben from Synergy Inc, Dr. Scott Kellogg, Therese Killen and John Hamilton.  The Dissemination Package Completion date is September 16, 2005.  Scheduled presentation:  June Blending Conference for NASADAD.

MOTIVATIONAL INCENTIVES BLENDING TEAM: The Motivational Incentives for Enhanced Drug Abuse Recovery (MIEDAR) successfully held its hand-off meeting December 3, 2004, Washington DC.  Dr. Tim Condon facilitated the meeting. Mady Chalk and Karl White, SAMHSA participated. Dr. Maxine Stitzer, Lead Principal Investigator presented an overview, background and results of the study.   Drs. Scott Kellogg and Nancy Petry presented adoption and training experiences.  Three community treatment providers involved in the study shared lessons learned. Preliminary dissemination strategies were recommended and the Blending Team membership was finalized which includes: Dr. Nancy Petry Department of Psychiatry University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT; Dr. Scott Kellogg, Clinical Psychologist, The Rockefeller University, New York, NY; John Hamilton, Executive Director, LMG Programs, Inc, Stanford, CT; Amy Shanahan, Northeast ATTC/IRETA; Anne Helene Skinstad, Director, Prairielands ATTC; Joseph D. MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING BLENDING TEAM: Met November 4-5, 2004, in Washington, DC. Reviewed draft products, made revision recommendations and a work plan to submit content to NIDA for review by January 15, 2005. Formatting and production to follow NIDA review. Contents to include a briefing package, summary of the CTN results, MI Assessment protocol description, supervisor audio tape rating manual, portfolio of supervisor tools for building/maintaining counselor MI skills, demonstration audio tapes and expert ratings in English and Spanish, and a training design for introducing the blending products to administrators and supervisors.

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING BLENDING TEAM: (Northwest Frontier, Caribbean Basin & Hispanic, Mid-Atlantic) met July 15-16 in Portland, OR. Guests included Karl White, CSAT, Tim Condon, NIDA, and Suman Rao, NIDA. Team decided roll-out products will include: briefing package for the ATTC Network, briefing package for SSA Directors and CTP CEOs, description of the MI Assessment intervention, summary of clinical trials results, strategies for building MI competency in counseling and clinical supervision staff, and a supervisor's tool kit for building and maintaining MI skills. Draft package of products due to NIDA January 15, 2005. Next meeting of the blending team will be November 4-5, 2004.

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING BLENDING TEAM:  Sherry Ceperich (Mid-Atlantic), Steve Gallon (Northwest Frontier) and Edna Quinones (Caribbean Basin) attended the Motivational Interviewing Hand Off meeting May 17-18, in Bethesda, MD. The MI Blending Team meeting tentatively is set for mid-July, which will start the six-month clock to prepare materials for the roll-out of materials from the CTN MI protocol of MI infused intakes.

MID-AMERICA:  Held the second Buprenorphine Awareness workshop in its region Thursday, May 12, 2005, in Wichita, KS.  40 persons attended.  Trainers were: Jan Campbell, M.D., an authorized Buprenorphine physician, and faculty member at the University of Kansas Medical Center since 1982; and Percy Menzies, M.Pharm., President of Assisted Recovery Centers of America (ARCA), a treatment center for alcohol and drug use disorders based in St. Louis, MO.  Both were participants in the Buprenorphine Awareness training of trainers held in Kansas City in January 2005.  Participants at the May 12 training included substance abuse treatment professionals, mental health professionals, nurses and physicians.  A representative of Reckitt Benckiser, the Pharmaceutical company that markets Suboxone (buprenorphine), was also present at the workshop and provided information and literature for participants.  For more information contact Debbie Rockford, 816-482-1175.

MID-AMERICA:  Published the final reports on the Workforce Needs Assessment Surveys conducted in 2004 in three states in the region: Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma.  The survey gathered current workforce information on frontline workers, agency directors and their agencies.  The 48-page publications are organized around five guiding questions:  1) What are the characteristics of the workforce?  2) What types of services are being provided and to whom?  3) How does the workforce perceive their skills and training needs?  4) How is the work environment perceived in terms of supports/constraints and job satisfaction? and 5) What are the future challenges to the workforce?  Reports were disseminated April 2005 to SSA offices, treatment center staff and directors who participated in surveys, Mid-America Coordinating Council members, and other stakeholders in the region.  The three Reports can be downloaded from the Mid-America Web site.  Note:  The Kansas Addictions Workforce Study was completed in 2002 by Kansas Addiction and Prevention Services.  For more information contact Alicia Wendler, 816-482-1199.

SOUTHERN COAST:  Sponsored Nancy Rosenshine, MS, as the trainer/facilitator for a workforce development event in Birmingham, AL, on April 25, 2005.  This event brought together 77 substance abuse professionals from the University of Alabama Birmingham, Department of Psychiatry, Substance Abuse Programs to address workforce retention strategies for this team such as:  team building, diversity, leadership, problem solving, decision making, workforce retention, communication.

SOUTHERN COAST:  Added a new feature to the home page of their Web site - Free On-line Alcohol Screening.  This online alcohol screening tool is a syndicated service provided by Join Together to help individuals assess their own alcohol consumption patterns to determine if their drinking is likely to be harming their health or increasing their risk for future harm.  Through education and referral, it urges those whose drinking is harmful or hazardous to take positive action, and informs all adults who consume alcohol about guidelines and caveats for lower-risk drinking.  This feature must be coordinated through Join Together, but it is free.

SOUTHEAST:  Attended the 7th Annual Lonnie E. Mitchell National HBCU Substance Abuse conference which was held April 19-23, 2005, at the Wyndham Inner Harbor Hotel, located in Baltimore, MD.  This year's theme was "Navigating New Pathways in Addressing Substance Abuse and Mental Health Challenges."  The conference focused on bringing cutting-edge substance abuse research, policy development and health disparity issues of African Americans to the attention of the public and HBCU students and to identify connection between alcohol, illicit drugs and communities.

NATIONAL OFFICE:  Monika Masuda has joined the National Office as the I-Net Administrator.  Monika Masuda has transferred from UMKC’s Institute for Human Development, where she assisted the Systems Administrator. In her role as I-Net Administrator she will support the office staff and be responsible for the National Office sponsored Web sites.
