Recertification Requirements
Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC)
- Have a minimum of 270
hours of documented training and/or education in both alcohol and drug
treatment.
- Provide documentation
of at least 300 performance hours supervised practical training in the
twelve (12) core functions with a minimum of 10 hours in each core function.
Clinical supervision shall be provided by a SACAVA certified clinical
supervisor or a SACAVA board pre-approved supervisor.
- Submit references from
two individuals and your clinical supervisor who can attest to your
professional knowledge and skills.
- Submit evidence of at
least 6000 hours of alcohol and drug abuse counseling work experience during
the last six (6) years. The SACAVA board may substitute relevant formal
education for part of the work experience requirements. Formal education
encompasses High School Diploma/GED, AA/AS, BA/BS and MA/MS degrees in the
human services field.
- Written Case Study
(five copies of case study must be submitted) effective 9/01/06.
- Subscribe to a code of
professional conduct.
- Pass the national
IC&RC written exam administered by SACAVA.
- Successfully complete
a Case Presentation Method (CPM) oral examination.
- Pay all application
and certification fees

Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS)
- Have an active
certification as a CAC (SACAVA) or hold a specialty substance abuse
credential in another professional discipline in the human services field at
the masters level or higher.
- Verification of 5
years (10,000 hours) of counseling experience treating AODA population.
- Verification of 2 year
(4,000 hours) of clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field. These 2
years may be included in the previous 5 years of experience but must include
provisions of 200 contact hours of face-to-face clinical supervision.
- Thirty (30) hours of
SACAVA approved didactic training in clinical supervision. This must include
a minimum of six (6) clock hours specific clinical supervision training in
each of the following areas:
o
Assessment/evaluation (counselor)
o
Counselor development
o
Management/administration
o
Professional responsibilities
- Submission of 3
letters of reference from individuals familiar with applicants work as a
clinical supervisor, one of whom must have supervised the candidates
clinical supervision.
- Subscribe to a code of
professional conduct.
- Pass the national
IC&RC written exam administered by SACAVA.
- Pay all application
and certification fees

Certified Criminal Justice (ADDICTIONS) Professional (CCJP)
Education
- The education/training
requirement is a total of 270 hours.
- Education is defined
as formal, structured instruction in the form of workshops, seminars,
institutes, in-services, college/university credit courses and distance
learning.
- One hour of
education/training is equal to 50 minutes of continuous instruction.
- Education/training
must be specifically related to the knowledge and skills necessary to
perform the tasks within the IC&RC/AODA, Inc. Criminal Justice Addictions
Professional performance domains as they relate to both adults and
juveniles.
Domain #1 – Dynamics of Addiction and Criminal Behavior
Domain #2 – Legal, Ethical, and Professional Responsibility
Domain #3 – Criminal Justice System and Processes
Domain #4 – Screening, Intake and Assessment
Domain #5 – Case Management, Monitoring, and Client Supervision
Domain #6 – Counseling. *(A minimum of 10 hours in each domain)

Six hours of

Supervised Practical
Training
Realizing that supervision
may take place in a variety of settings and have many faces, the IC&RC AODA,
Inc. determined not to place limiting criteria on areas of supervision or
qualifications of a supervisor. Rather, it was determined that supervision
should be as broadly defined as in the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT)/Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Technical Assistance
Publication (TAP) #21. TAP 21 defines supervision/clinical supervision as the
“administrative, clinical, and evaluative process of monitoring, assessing and
enhancing counselor performance.” *(A minimum of 10 hours supervision in
each domain).

Recertification Requirements
To maintain the high
standards of this profession and to assure continuing awareness and appropriate
incorporation of new knowledge in the field, the Substance Abuse Certification
Alliance of Virginia requires that all SACAVA certifications be renewed every
two (2) years.
To be re-certified an
individual must:
- The Certified Clinical
Supervisor must hold and maintain the prerequisite credential (AODA,AAODA,
CCDP or CCJP)or hold and maintain the specialty substance abuse credential
in another professional discipline in the human services field at the
master’s level or higher and six hours of continuing education in clinical
supervision must be earned every two years. CEs may renew at different
intervals but must require at least 3 hours for every year of certification.
The hours used towards recertification may be a part of the 40 hours used
for the AODA, AAODA, CCDP or CCJP recertification.
- Maintain knowledge of
the discipline through forty (40) clock hours of documented ongoing
pertinent education and training within the last two (2) years. No more than
50% (20 hours) of training can be from in-service training and all hours
must be SACAVA approved. Continued training must meet SACAVAs original
training/education standard, in order to be approved. The CCS Certification
only requires six (6) clock hours of clinical-supervision-specific training
if the individual also holds a CAC certification.\
- Endorse by signature
and uphold by practice a Code of Ethics for Professional Behavior,
- Submit a $75.00
re-certification fee,
- There is a late fee in
the amount of $50 for all lapsed re-certifications,
- Complete an
application, signed by the applicant.
