Requirements:

Once licensed by the State of Texas, additional credentialing is available through TCBAP.

Advanced Addiction Counselor (AAC):

  • Current LCDC license or meet exempt requirements for LCDC
  • 300 hour Chemical Dependency Counseling Practicum covering 12 Core Functions
  • ICRC AAC exam
  • ICRC Case Presentation Method oral exam
  • 270 chemical dependency education hours, 135 of which must be Alcohol/Drug specific, 6 must be ethics, and 6 must be HIV/AIDS education
  • Advanced degree in addiction studies or behavioral science from a regionally accredited college or university

Recertification: every 2 years

  • Currently active and licensed in the field of alcoholism and drug abuse
  • Absent of any ethical or malpractice violations
  • 40 hours continuing education; including 3 hours ethics and 3 hours clinical supervision
  • Submission of application including signed copy of ethical standards for
    Advanced Addiction Counselors
  • Recertification fee

Alcohol Drug Counselor Level I - Member (ADC Level I):

  • Current LCDC license or meet exempt requirements for LCDC
  • 300 hour Chemical Dependency Counseling Practicum covering 12 Core Functions
  • ICRC Counselor Certification exam

  • 270 chemical dependency education hours, 135 of which must be Alcohol/Drug specific, 6 must be ethics, and 6 must be HIV/AIDS education
  • 3 years (6,000 hours) chemical dependency counseling experience

Alcohol Drug Counselor Level II - Member (ADC Level II):

  • Current LCDC license or meet exempt requirements for LCDC
  • 300 hour Chemical Dependency Counseling Practicum covering 12 Core Functions
  • ICRC Counselor Certification exam
  • ICRC Case Presentation Method oral exam
  • 270 chemical dependency education hours, 135 of which must be Alcohol/Drug specific, 6 must be ethics, and 6 must be HIV/AIDS education
  • 7 years (14,000 hours) chemical dependency counseling experience OR:
    Bachelors degree and 3 years (6,000 hours)chemical dependency counseling experience

Alcohol Drug Counselor Level III - Member (ADC Level III):

  • Current LCDC license or meet exempt requirements for LCDC
  • 300 hour Chemical Dependency Counseling Practicum covering 12 Core Functions
  • ICRC Counselor Certification exam
  • ICRC Case Presentation Method oral exam
  • 270 chemical dependency education hours, 135 of which must be Alcohol/Drug specific, 6 must be ethics, and 6 must be HIV/AIDS education
  • 12 years (24,000 hours) chemical dependency counseling experience
    OR:
    Masterss degree and 3 years (6,000 hours)chemical dependency counseling experience

Recertification: every 2 years

  • Currently active and licensed in the field of alcoholism and drug abuse
  • Absent of any ethical or malpractice violations
  • 40 hours continuing education
  • Submission of application including signed copy of ethical standards for Alcohol and Drug Counselors
  • Recertification fee

Certified Chemical Dependency Specialist (CCDS):

  • Masters degree in a counseling related area
  • Licensure in the State of Texas in 1 of the following areas: LCDC, LPC, LMSW, LMFT, Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Physician, Certified Addictions Registered Nurse, Licensed Psychological Associate, Advance Practice Nurse with specialty in Psych-Mental Health (APN-P/MH)
  • 4,000 hours work experience in chemical dependency counseling
  • 135 hours alcohol/drug specific education
  • Letter of recommendation from a licensed/certified colleague
    Note: This credential does not have reciprocity with other ICRC member boards

Recertification: every 2 years

  • Currently active and licensed in the field of alcoholism and drug abuse
  • Absent of any ethical or malpractice violations
  • 40 hours continuing education
  • Submission of application including signed copy of ethical standards for Certified Chemical Dependency Specialists
  • Recertification fee

Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS):

  • Current certification as an ADC or AAC
  • 5 years counseling experience
  • 2 years supervision experience
  • 30 hours didactic training in clinical supervision, including training in each of the following areas: Assessment/Evaluation, Counselor Development, Management/Administration and Professional Responsibility
  • 1 reference letter from a supervisor and 2 from peers
  • ICRC Clinical Supervision exam

Recertification: every 2 years

  • Currently active as a supervisor in the field of addiction counseling
  • Absent of any ethical or malpractice violations
  • 40 hours continuing education. Documentation of current ADC or AAC certification shall serve as verification of this requirement. However, 6 of the 40 hours must be specific to clinical supervision. Certificates of completion must be attached to the recertification application to document this requirement.
  • Submission of application including signed copy of ethical standards for Clinical Supervisors
  • Recertification fee

Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS):

  • 100 hours education; 50 hours must be Alcohol/Drug specific, and 50 hours prevention specific training
  • 120 hour practicum in prevention
  • 1 reference letter from a supervisor and 2 from peers
  • ICRC Prevention exam
  • 1 year (2,000 hours) prevention work experience

Recertification: every 2 years

  • Absent of any ethical or malpractice violations
  • 40 hours continuing education. Documentation and/or certificates must be titled in areas of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention education or the 6 domain areas
  • Submission of application including signed copy of ethical standards for CPS
  • Recertification fee

Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor

 

A non-reciprocal credential for counselors with training in treatment of compulsive gambling.  Requirements include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Current certification as an ADC, AAC, or CCDS
  • Thirty hours of instruction in Gambling I and Gambling II domains, with 15 hours in each domain
  • Two letters of recommendation from certified/licensed colleagues
  • This credential does not have reciprocity with other ICRC member boards.

Certified Criminal Justice Professional - (CCJP)

 

A reciprocal credential for those professionals active in criminal justice.  Minimum requirements vary with education level. ** Requirements include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Documentation of 270 hours of education including training in the six core areas of the CCJP:  dynamics of addiction and criminal behavior; legal, ethical and professional responsibility; criminal justice system and processes; screening intake and assessment; case management, monitoring and supervision; and counseling.
  • Two hundred hour direct supervision practicum in the six core areas described above.
  • Successful score on the ICRC CCJP written Examination
  • Three years (6,000 hours) criminal justice work experience
  • Documentation of at least a high school diploma or GED**

 

**Minimum requirements vary with level of education

 

  • Associates Degree = 200 education hours, 150 hour practicum, 5,000 hours of work experience, successful score on exam
  • Bachelor’s Degree or ADC/LCDC = 150 education hours, 100 hour practicum, 4,000 hours of work experience, successful score on exam
  • Master’s Degree or CCS = 100 education hours, 60 hour practicum, 2,000 hours of work experience, successful score on exam
  • Doctoral Degree or LPC, LCSW, MAC, AAC = 60 education hours, 1,000 hours work experience, successful score on exam

 

 

Certified Criminal Justice Professional Applicant Status - (CCJP-A)

 

An applicant status credential for those professionals active in criminal justice.   A CCJP-A status may be issued to an individual who has met the educational and practicum requirements for the Texas CCJP, but has not yet passed the exam and may still be working on direct service/work experience hours. Minimum requirements vary with education level.**  Requirements include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Documentation of 270 hours of education including training in the six core areas of the CCJP:  dynamics of addiction and criminal behavior; legal, ethical and professional responsibility; criminal justice system and processes; screening intake and assessment; case management, monitoring and supervision; and counseling.
  • Two hundred hour direct supervision practicum in the six core areas described above.

Licensure in the State of Texas in one of the following areas: LCDC, LPC, LMSW, LMFT, Licensed Psychologist, Licensed Physician, Certified Addictions Registered Nurse, Licensed Psychological Associate, Advance Practice Nurse with specialty in Psyche-Mental Health (APN-P/MH)

 

In addition, applicants must document either:

 

  1. Five years of counseling experience and
  2. Two years of supervision experience, OR
  3. Thirty hours of didactic training in clinical supervision, including training in each of the following areas: Assessment/Evaluation, Counselor Development, Management/Administration and Professional Responsibility

 

This credential does not have reciprocity with other ICRC member boards.
