Requirements:


Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS):

Definition: IC&RC member boards define prevention as a proactive process which empowers individuals and systems to meet the challenges of life events and transitions by creating and reinforcing healthy behavior and lifestyles and by reducing risks contributing to alcohol, tobacco and other drug misuse and other related issues.

  • Experience: 1 year (2,000 hours) ATOD prevention related experience
    Training: 100 contact hours prevention specific training. 50 hours of this training must be specific ATOD training. Must have verification of 120-hour practicum in the 6 performance domains (minimum of 10 in each):

    Planning and Evaluation
    Education and skill development
    Community Organization
    Public and Organizational Policy
    Professional Growth and Responsibility
    Examination: IC&RC written prevention examination
    Code of Ethics: Adherence to professional code of ethics through a signed statement

Recertification: Includes the review of continuing education hours for the purpose of maintaining certification. Recertification standards must be published and 40 hours of continuing education must be earned in 2 years.

Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS):

Definition: The IC&RC defines Clinical Supervision as a specific aspect of staff development dealing with the clinical skills and competencies for persons providing counseling. The format for supervision is commonly one-to-one and/or small groups on a regular basis. Methods for review often include case review and discussion, utilizing direct observation of a counselor’s clinical work. A primary purpose of clinical supervision is to ensure skill development evidence in quality patient/client care.

  • Prerequisite: Certification as an AODA counselor at the reciprocal level or an individual holding a specialty substance abuse credential in other professional discipline in the human services field at the master's level or higher.
  • Experience: 5 years (10,000 hours) of counseling experience as an AODA counselor.
  • Supervisory Experience: Verification of two (2) years (4000 hours) of clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field. These two (2) years may be included in the five (5) years of counseling experience and must include the provision of 200 contact hours of face-to-face clinical supervision.
  • Training: Verification of thirty (30) hours of education in clinical supervision. This must include training in each of the following areas:
    Assessment/Evaluation
    Counselor Development
    Management/Administration
    Professional Responsibilities
  • Examination: Passing of the IC&RC written examination testing Clinical Supervisors.
  • Code of Ethics: Signed code of ethics specific to Clinical Supervisors

Recertification: Includes the review of continuing education hours for the purposes of maintaining certification. Recertification standards must be published and 6 hours of continuing education must be earned every two years. The 6 hours used toward recertification of the Clinical Supervisor certificate may be a part of the 40 hours used for the AODA or AAODA recertification.
