Certified Addiction Counselor II (CAC II):

  • Associate of Arts Degree in Human Services field from an accredited college or 60 college credits with an emphasis on Human Services or Substance Abuse from an accredited college
  • 270 hours Alcohol and Drug specific education, including the 12 Core Functions
  • 6 hours specific Ethics training
  • 6 hours of Cultural Diversity training
  • 6 hours specific HIV training

      • Masters or higher degree with 30 semester or 40-quarter hours in counseling courses will reduce work requirement by 4,000 hours

  • Applicants should posses the following qualifications in addition to those general qualifications and competencies already enumerated:
    • Ability to speak knowledgeably on Native American alcohol/drug problems
    • Knowledge of different counseling philosophies and theories related to Native American healing and recovery practices
    • Ability to coordinate, manage and facilitate continuance of treatment within the tribal health care delivery system
    • Ability to assess the effectiveness of various treatment and program modalities as they apply to Native American clients and their families
       
  • IC & RC / AODA Exam and Oral Presentation
  • Acceptance of and adherence to the Professional Code and Ethical Standards
     

Certified Addiction Counselor III (CAC III):

  • Masters Degree in Human Services field from an accredited college or 5 years experience at the program director level and a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences in Human Services field.

  • RECERTIFICATION:
     

·         Recertification is required every two years on the anniversary of certification.

·         Application for recertification is due ninety days prior to expiration of certification.

·         The applicant may request and be approved for one (1) ninety day grace period. After this, the applicant is required to pay an application extension fee.

·         Applicants for recertification must be in effect and good standing at the time of recertification.

·         Certification that has been revoked will not be subject to renewal or recertification. Applicants whose certification status falls under this condition can submit a new application for review; subject to all the provisions a new application.

·         Recertification requires verification of forty (40) clock hours of continuing education during a two year period. At least twenty (20) hours must be acquired outside your agency.

·         Lapsed certification of no more than 4 years can be reinstated. The applicant must meet all recertification requirements and pay all fees for the lapsed time.

·         Supporting documentation of continuing education must be submitted with the recertification application. Documentation may include transcripts, certificates and class/workshop syllabus/itinerary.

·         NOTICE: Ethics, Cultural Competency, and HIV/AIDS are required CEU/Credits.

·         *Workshops or classes may be pre-qualified by the institution providing the training. Facilitators and instructors may submit their classes or workshops with the class itinerary for review by our board.

 

 

Standards For Certified Prevention Specialist (CAPS)

 

Education:  Associate of Arts Degree in Human Services Field or 60 college credits with an emphasis on Human Services or Substance Abuse from an accredited college.

 

•           Must include six (6) hours of Prevention specific ethics.

 

Required:  Verification of 150 contact hours prevention specific training. Seventy-Five (75) hours of this training must be specific ATOD training.

 

Experience:  Verification of four (4) years (8,000 hours) ATOD prevention related experience.

 

Supervised Practical Training:  

 

At least 120 performance hours with a minimum of 10 hours in the five (5) performance domains the five (5) performance domains (minimum of 20 in each). The five domains are:

 

•           Planning and Evaluation

•           Education and Skill Development

•           Community Organization

•           Public and Organizational Policy

•           Professional Growth and Responsibility

 

Supervised Practical Training is defined as formal, systematic process that focuses on skill development and integration of knowledge. This training must occur as part of the eligible work experience and may be completed under more than one supervisor or agency and must be documented.

 

Examination:  Passing the IC&RC / AODA written prevention examination.

 

Ethics: Adherence to professional code of ethics through a signed statement.

 

Recertification:
