LICENSURE Licensed Substance Abuse Technician
LICENSURE
Licensed Substance Abuse Technician:
- AAS from a regionally accredited college or university
in chemical dependency with minimum 30 semester credit hours counseling
related coursework as determined by substance abuse credentialing committee.
- Undergraduate or graduate coursework completed outside AAS and
submitted to meet curriculum requirements shall constitute no more than 6
semester credit hours.
- Required degree must contain minimum 18 semester hours coursework
specifically related to chemical dependency
Licensed Associate Substance Abuse Counselor:
- An applicant for licensure as an
associate substance abuse counselor shall present evidence acceptable to the
substance abuse credentialing committee that applicant has either:
1. Bachelors degree in a behavioral health science from a regionally accredited college or university with minimum of 30 semester credit hours counseling related coursework
as determined by the substance abuse credentialing committee.
Undergraduate or graduate coursework completed outside of bachelor degree and
submitted to meet curriculum requirements shall constitute no more than 12
semester credit hours
OR
2. Masters degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university with minimum 24 semester credit hours counseling related coursework
as determined by the substance abuse credentialing committee. Graduate
coursework completed outside master or higher degree and submitted to meet
curriculum requirements shall constitute no more than 3 semester hours. -
3200 hours supervised work
experience in substance abuse counseling in no less than 24 months.
These hours shall include a minimum of 1600 hours direct client contact.
Licensed Independent Substance Abuse Counselor:
- Masters degree or higher from a
regionally accredited college or university with minimum 24 semester credit
hours counseling related coursework as determined by the substance abuse
credentialing committee. Graduate coursework completed outside master or
higher degree and submitted to meet curriculum requirements shall constitute
no more than 3 semester hours.

3200 hours supervised work
experience in substance abuse counseling in no less than 24 months.
These hours shall include a minimum of 1600 hours direct client contact.
The Substance Abuse Credentialing
Committee approves the licensure examinations of the following organizations:
1. International Certification Reciprocity Consortium/Alcohol and Other
Drug Abuse (ICRC/AODA)
2. Level II or higher exams
offered by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors
(NAADAC)
