Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor/Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (CADC/AODA)

Advanced Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor (ACADC/AODA)

Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor/Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (CADC/AODA)

 

Experience

 

  • Three years  (6,000 hours) of supervised work experience under a certified or licensed behavioral healthcare professional.
  • Supervised work experience is defined as paid or voluntary experience as a counselor who provides direct counseling services to AODA clients.
  • Supervised work experience must be in the IC&RC/AODA performance domains of :
    • Assessment
    • Counseling
    • Case management
    • Client
    • Family and Community Education
    • Professional Responsibility.

 

  • The ASACB allows an applicant to exchange:
    • 1,000 hours of the 6,000 hour requirement for an approved Associate degree in the Human Services or Behavioral Science field
    • 2,000 hours for an approved Bachelor degree
    • 4,000 hours for an approved advanced degree (Masters or above) provided they meet the supervision requirements.

 

  • All experience must be documented as outlined in the ASACB Application and Standards manual.

 

Education

 

The education requirement for initial certification is:

  • A total of 270 clock hours including six clock hours in ethics.
  • Education is defined as formal classroom education (workshops, seminars, institutes, in-services, and college/university work).
  • Education must be specifically related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the tasks within each IC&RC performance domain.
  • All education hours must be pre-approved by the ASACB Education committee and must be documented by certificate or by official transcript.

 

Training/Supervised Practicum

 

  • A practicum is defined as a formal, systematic process that focuses on skill development and integration of knowledge.
  • The 300-hour supervised practicum training must take place in a setting where AODA counseling is being provided.
  • The practicum training hours must be directly supervised by a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) and must be specifically related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform all of the IC&RC /AODA Twelve Core Functions with at least ten (10) hours in each core function.
  • Direct supervision is defined as one-on-one supervision, group supervision or direct observation of skills within the core functions.
  • The practicum training may occur as part of the eligible work experience and may be completed under the more than one supervisor or agency.
  • All practicum training hours must be documented as outlined in the ASACB Application and Standards manual.

 

International Written Examination

 

  • All member certification boards must use the IC&RC Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) written examination in their certification process for new applicants.

 

Case Presentation Method

 

  • The Case Presentation Method (CPM) is a standardized process by which an applicant’s competence in the Twelve Core Functions is measured by peers through an oral examination.

 

Code of Ethics

 

  • The applicant must sign the ASACB code of ethics which is published in the Application and Standards manual.

 

Recertification

 

  • 60 hours of approved continuing education must be earned within the two-year certification cycle. November 1, of odd numbered years is the current re-certification deadline for this credential.

Advanced Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor (ACADC/AODA)

 

Experience

 

  • One year (2000 hours) of supervised work experience under a certified or licensed behavioral healthcare professional.
  • Supervised work experience is defined as paid or voluntary experience as a counselor who provides direct counseling services to AODA clients.
  • An AODA client is a person with a diagnosis of alcohol and/or other drug abuse or dependency.
  • Supervised work experience must be in the IC&RC/AODA performance domains of:
    • Assessment
    • Counseling
    • Case Management
    • Client, Family and Community Education
    • Research Design, analysis and utilization
    • Professional Responsibility.

 

·        All experience must be documented as outlined in the ASACB Application and Standards manual.

 

Education

 

  • Master’s degree in a Human Services Behavioral Sciences field with a clinical application (i.e. supervised practicum) from a regionally or nationally accredited college or university.
  • Additionally, six (6) clock hours in ethics is required.

 

Training/Supervised Practicum

 

  • The 300-hour supervised practicum training must take place in a setting where AODA counseling is being provided.  
  • The practicum training hours must be directly supervised by a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) and must be specifically related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform all of the IC&RC/AODA Twelve Core Functions with at least ten (10) hours in each core function.

Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS)

 

Definition

 

  • The IC&RC defines clinical supervision as a specific aspect of staff development dealing with developing clinical skills and competencies for persons providing counseling. A primary purpose of clinical supervision is to ensure skill development as evidenced in quality patient/client care.

 

Pre-requisite

 

  • Current certification as an IC&RC/AODA counselor or current certification as a Certified Criminal Justice Professional (CCJP) at the reciprocal level or hold a current valid specialty in another professional discipline in the human services field at the Masters level or higher.

 

Counselor Experience

 

  • Five (5) years (10,000 hours) of work experience as an IC&RC/AODA counselor is required. Higher education does not substitute for any portion of the work experience requirement.

 

Supervisory Experience

 

  • Two (2) years (4000 hours) of clinical supervisory experience in the AODA field is required.
  • The two (2) years may be included in the five (5) years of counseling experience and must include the provision of 200 contact hours of face-to-face clinical supervision.
  • All experience must be documented as outlined in the ASACB Application and Standards manual.

 

Education

 

  • The education requirement for initial certification is thirty (30) hours of didactic training in clinical supervision.

o       The training must include six (6) hours in each of the following areas: Assessment and Evaluation

o       Counselor Development

o       Management and Administration and Professional Responsibilities.

 

Written Examination

 

  • All member certification boards must use the IC&RC Clinical Supervisor written examination in their certification process.

 

Code of Ethics

 

  • The applicant must sign an ASACB code of ethics specific to Clinical Supervisors.

 

Re-certification

 

  • Eighteen (18) hours of approved continuing education must be earned within the two-year certification cycle.
  • Some hours may count for both counselor and supervisor re-certification.  
  • November 1 of even numbered years is the current re-certification postmark deadline for this credential.

Certified Criminal Justice Professional (CCJP)

 

Work Experience Requirement

 

  • Three years (6,000 hours) ofsupervised work experience. Supervised work experience is defined as paid or voluntary experience providing direct services to individuals involved in the criminal justice system (e.g., law enforcement, judicial, corrections, probation/parole, etc.) system.
  • Two-thirds (2/3) of the work experience hours must be in the provision of AODA counseling.
  • Supervised work experience must be within the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) CCJP performance domains. (see below)
  • Unsupervised work experience may NOT be substituted for the experience requirements.
  • All experience must be documented by an IC&RC/AODA reciprocal level counselor, and must have been earned within the past five- (5) years.
  • Certification boards may allow an applicant to substitute a degree for part of the work experience.

 

Domain #1 - Dynamics of Addiction and Criminal Behavior

Domain #2 - Legal, Ethical, and Professional Responsibility

Domain #3 - Criminal Justice System and Processes

Domain #4 - Screening, Intake and Assessment

Domain #5 - Case Management, Monitoring, and Client Supervision

Domain #6 - Counseling

 

 

High School/GED

  • 3 years (6,000 hours) of documented work experience (of which 4,000 hours must be in the provision of AODA counseling) in direct services in criminal justice addictions services obtained over the past 5 years.

A.A. /A.S. or Certified AODA Counselor (Non IC&RC)

  • 2 ½ years (5,000 hours) of documented work experience (of which 3,300 hours must be in the provision of AODA counseling) in direct services in criminal justice addictions services obtained over the past 5 years.

B.A. /B.S. or IC&RC Certified Reciprocal AODA Counselor

  • 2 years (4,000 hours) of documented work experience (of which 2,640 hours must be in the provision of AODA counseling) in direct services in criminal justice addictions services obtained over the past 5 years.

M.A./M.S. or IC&RC Certified Supervisor AODA Counselor

  • 1 year (2,000 hours) of documented work experience (of which 1,320 hours must be in the provision of AODA counseling) in direct services in criminal justice addictions services obtained over the past 5 years.

Above Masters Level or IC&RC Certified Advanced AODA Counselor or

other Advanced Credential (i.e. NBCC, CRCC, NASW, MAC, etc.)

  • 6 months (1,000 hours) of documented work experience (of which 660 hoursmust be in the provision of AODA counseling) in direct services in criminaljustice addictions services obtained over the past 5 years.

 

Education Requirement

  • The education/training requirement is a total of 270 ASACB-approved hours.
  • Education is defined as formal, structured instruction in the form of workshops, seminars, institutes, in-services, college/university credit courses and distance learning as approved by theASACB.
  • One hour of education/training is equal to 50 minutes of continuous instruction.
  • Education/Training must be specifically related to the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the tasks within the IC&RC/AODA, Inc. Criminal Justice Addictions Professional performance domains as they relate to both adults and juveniles.
  • Applicants must provide documentation of
    • At least ten (10) hours in each CCJP performance domain. Up to seventy (70) hours may be in-service training.
    • Six (6) hours of education/training must be in professional ethics and responsibilities. Education hours must have been earned within the immediate past five (5) years.
    • All education/training must be documented by certificate of completion.
    • College/university transcripts must be sent directly from the institution to the ASACB office and will be reviewed for content and appropriateness.

 

High School/GED

Supervised Practicum Requirement

·        Applicants must complete a 300 hour supervised practicum.

·        Supervision is broadly defined as in the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) / Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Technical Assistance Publication (TAP) #21. TAP 21 defines supervision/clinical supervision as the administrative, clinical, and evaluative process of monitoring, assessing and enhancing counselor performance.

·        Applicants must provide documentation of receiving at least ten (10) hours of face-to-face clinical supervision in each of the six- (6) CJP performance domains.

·        Applicants must provide documentation of receiving at least five (5) hours of face-to-face clinical supervision in each of the ICRC/AODA 12 Core Functions.

·        The practicum hours must be directly supervised by a Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) and must have been obtained within the immediate past five (5) years.

 

High School/GED

  • 300 hour supervised practicum including 60 hours within each CCJP performance domain and 60 hours within each of the ICRC/AODA 12 Core Functions

A.A./A.S. or Certified AODA Counselor (Non IC&RC)
